“I have been preparing for an eye surgery that would provide clear
distance and reading vision, without glasses, my entire career,” says
Dr. Beim. “I have treated every cataract surgery, since my first in
1991, as a refractive surgery. I was meticulous about when and where to
cut sutures back in the day when we placed sutures to close ocular incisions.
I made painstakingly precise ocular measurements for intraocular lens power
selection, to provide the best vision without glasses possible. I have and
still use the best and most current technologies available to examine and
measure the eye to provide the best surgical result. These instruments are
very expensive and the data interpretation tedious, but no expense or effort
is spared to provide the best visual result.
There has never been any compromise when it comes to the care of my patients,
and there never will be.
I believe every step of my procedure, especially my Safe Incision(sm) technique, provides the safest, most stable, and fastest healing surgery possible,” says Dr. Beim. “I want my patients to enjoy the best possible results and return to their lifestyle activities as soon as possible.”
There are many ophthalmologists in the field, but you’ll never find one that tries harder or cares more about you than Dr. Steven Beim.
Dr. Beim was born the son of a Jewish Polish immigrant who survived five years in Auschwitz, the most infamous Nazi death camp of WWII. His mother was hidden and protected by a Catholic family in Holland during the same war.
When he was six, his parents brought home The World Book Encyclopedia set. While flipping through one of the volumes, he found himself mesmerized with the structure of the eye, staring at the transparencies of the ocular system for countless hours.
At the age of 10, Steven was asked to write a paper on any scientific topic he desired. He wrote about the rods and cones of the retina.
At the age of 12, he was given the task of building a model of anything in science that interested him. He constructed an accurate structural model of the human eye.
He pursued a double major of Aerospace Engineering and Pre-Med., and graduated number 22 out of a class of thousands, Summa Cum Laude from UCLA. He received awards in Physics, Chemistry and Engineering.
“My Parents are very special people. They are my greatest heroes,” says Dr. Beim. “Most of my extended family was murdered during WWII. When I learned of my family history at age six, after I saw my father’s branded arm, I knew I was placed on this Earth for a special reason – to change people’s lives. And by the grace of God, I have been given the opportunity to do exactly that.”
During the time Dr. Beim spent becoming a physician and ophthalmic surgeon, he spent countless hours determining the best techniques for each and every step of lenticular refractive surgery and cataract surgery, and for the variety of situations he might encounter during surgery.
From his first spelling test in the second grade, to his board recertification test, and all the education and experience in between, Steven strived to perform at his very best.
