What to Expect

Dr. Beim has performed thousands of Safe Incision(sm) procedures, and has spent years perfecting the thousands of minute hand movements necessary to perform this highly skilled procedure in the safest manner.

What to expect before surgery

Prior to surgery you’ll have a complete eye exam, a consultation regarding the surgery, and a pre-operative examination.

The complete eye exam includes a thorough examination of the front of the eyes, including pressure checks, a dilated exam of the back of the eyes, and an examination of all your eye functions such as eye motion and field of view. Any abnormality that must be corrected prior to surgery can be done during subsequent visits.

The consultation is a discussion of the problem, possible treatments, and details regarding what to expect during and after the surgery. This is a good time to educate yourself and your family.

The pre-operative exam includes a number of eye measurements, and discussions regarding the surgical technique, the risks, benefits, and alternatives of surgery. You’ll get instructions on obtaining your medical history and physical examination from your general doctor, and pre-registering at the hospital.

We’ll show you how to place an antibiotic drop in the “surgery eye” four times per day for two days prior to surgery. We’ll also show you how to clean your eyelid properly for two days prior to surgery.

What to expect during surgery

Surgery takes place at the hospital outpatient operating room.

The procedure lasts about 15 minutes, however you will be at the hospital about two hours.

You will not stay at the hospital after surgery.

Every effort is made to provide a completely painless and comfortable experience.

What to expect after surgery

You’ll wear a patch over your eye until the next morning. This helps to reduce the risk of infection.

Most people have good vision the next day, although some with very dense cataracts develop clearer vision over several days. Most are driving the next day.

We’ll clearly identify and discuss activities that are safe and those that should be postponed. Most people can return to work the day after surgery. If your work involves a dirty environment, you should try to remain in a clean area for the remainder of the week.

Medication after surgery involves placing two different drops in the eye, four times per day. Our staff and your post-operative information sheet will tell you how long to use the medications. One medication is provided for you free of charge. The other you’ll pick up from your pharmacy.

"I had the ReSTOR lens surgery in August, 2005, with perfect results. I had worn trifocal glasses or bifocal contacts for 50 years. I can now see things at a distance, which I could never see before or read the newspaper, a book, or work on the computer without reading glasses. I am so excited and happy with my new vision, I tell all my relatives and friends about ReSTOR implants. Within four (4) weeks of my surgery, I was back to riding and competing in barrel racing events on my horses. Thank you for sharing my amazing and wonderful experience with ReSTOR. Thank you Dr. Beim for changing my life."
